Youth Combat

The goals of the Youth Fighter Program Handbook are as follows:

1. To provide a safe environment for individuals ages seven (7) years through seventeen (17) years to participate in adult style martial activities

2. To provide more opportunities to involve and educate young people about not only SCA combat, but all aspects of the Society.

3. To introduce and reinforce the ideals of chivalry, honor and heraldic pageantry both on and off the list field.

4. To ensure that all parties involved with the Youth Fighter Program have Fun.

There shall be four (4) Youth Combat divisions. They are as follows:
A. Wolf division (ages 7 to 9)
B. Ram division (ages 10 to 12)
C. Bear division (ages 13 to 15)
D. Dragon division (ages 16 and 17)

A copy of the rules for Youth Combat can be found on Meridian Earl Marshal’s Web Page at the following link: http://www.meridies.org/marshal.html . Once you reach the marshal’s page scroll down to the Youth Combat section.

If you or (in the case of parents, your child) has not tried youth combat and wish to do so you are not required to have your own armor in order to start fighting. The barony has three suits of loaner armor, shields, and weapons just for this purpose. So, feel free to come out to fighter practice and give it a try. There are just a couple of things you need to do when you come to practice. Ok, three things. 1. Bring or wear a hard athletic cup (for males) or other appropriate hard groin protection (for females). 2. Wear long pants and appropriate shoes. Leather boots or shoes are preferred, but tennis shoes are fine. 3. A parent or legal guardian must be present in order for any minor to engage in youth combat. No parent/legal guardian, no fight. The parent/legal guardian must also be willing to sign a waiver of liability. If you wish to view the content of the waiver a copy of the wavier can be found HERE. You do not have to bring a copy of the waiver with you. We will have copies at fighter practice.

If anyone has anyone has questions or comments about youth combat please contact the youth combat marshal at the address below.
